Err 99

This morning I woke up ready for a bike ride and leisurely neighborhood shoot and much to my chagrin I found that my trusty 1D mark III was feeling quite under the weather. She’s got the dreaded “Err 99.” FUCK.

Well, I called Canon and it looks like they’ll need to take a hands-on look at her. It’ll take 2 weeks to check out and repair. SHIT. :-(

So now I’ve only got the film minolta (I found batteries for the meter! but still need to buy some film) and a 20D my buddy lent me earlier this summer, so expect the number of awesome 1.3×35mm crop /10.1 MP /10fps images to decrease dramatically in the next few weeks (although its not like I’ve been posting more than once a week this summer. Commuting consumes me). At least she will hopefully get back to me in time for my trip to New York. I’ve also started toying with the idea of trading her in for a 5D mark II once she’s fixed (which was ultimately the plan after I’m done with school). I’m not quite sure how I feel about that though.

Here is my latest obsession: a circa 1976 full-manual 35mm minolta SR-505 WITH 50mm f/1.4, 28mm f/2.8, and 200mm zoom that my mom found while cleaning out the closet. She bought it for my dad when they were still dating. It still works, except for the light meter — they stopped making that battery because it has mercury in it! This piece of family history makes me so happy.

I need to go out and buy some more film for it, I’m almost done with my first roll, but I’m sure the exposures are a bit iffy because I winged it with a roll of ASA 400 film that’s probably way past its expiration date. This will satiate my cravings for a rolleicord… for now.

Good Friday Teleconverter

April 15, 2009

Here’s a photo before church with my parents at Queen of All Saints when I went home on Friday.

I was very enticed to take pictures of the ceremony and saw a lot of really cool photo opps, but restrained myself since I didn’t wanna be a weirdo (because : (1) I didn’t ask the parish if I could do it first, and (2) I was supposed to be paying attention). There was a lady from the church with like a D40 or Rebel taking photos / pop-up flashing from 20 yards away, taunting me internally. We also left quickly right after the mass, which was sad because I wanted to take some indoor architecture photos. Another time…

Here’s some photos from the next day, outside of the Calumet Photo window, trying out a 2x teleconverter on my 70-200mm (now f/5.6 because of the light loss). I wasn’t very impressed, but I still wish I had something cheap, long, and accesible for sports.

Backup Your Memories!

March 22, 2009

This morning I was snooping around the house and found my father’s old superzoom point and shoot film camera:

Memories of my gradeschool field trips, visits from out-of-town relatives, family parties, and holidays at home started rushing back, and thanks to him it was all preserved on film. Then, I started snooping through old photo albums and found class pictures along with some of my homework from grade school. I didn’t know I was in the 3rd grade with one of my best friends, Dave Choi. I wish I had a working scanner because his class picture is hilarious.
