THIS. AIN’T. SPARTA!!

October 5, 2009

Here’s a quick t-shirt design I made tonight for my house. The hardest part was pen-tooling out Gerard Butler, for everything else I found free vectors on the internets. There isn’t a theme for homecoming this year (I wonder who dropped the ball on that one), so we decided to do a “300″-based float since we’re playing Michigan State (Spartans). Except the tables have turned. The ethnically offensive Chief Illiniwek will be kicking the lock-jawed Sparty the Spartan into a strategically-placed bottomless pit to his own doom. Or enjoyment. One could consider the fall to be like a never-ending ride on 6 flag’s giant drop, and more flags, more fun, ya know? PS. I love Adobe Illustrator.

Photography AND DESIGN

October 3, 2009

SO I know the name of my website is Dean Santarinala Photography and Design, and I haven’t shared any design. The truth is that I enjoy drawing and art a whole lot but am not nearly as serious about it as photography as of late. I doodle here and there, I have a couple sketchbooks, and sort of know how to use photoshop but I don’t really know much else. Here’s hoping that’ll change. I think eventually I want to take some classes and learn cool stuff like how to have l33t art skills on the computer (I want a wacom tablet — i miss that old one that I sold), learn to work with various media (ie PAINT), and and hone my sketchy abilities.

This past summer I took a sketchbook with me on the train and tried to draw something whenever I didn’t feel like reading or sleeping. This sorta tapered off at the end when I started getting really tired from work. :-P

More scannies after the break…

<< SEE MORE AFTER THE BREAK >>

Thursday Night: Part 8 of a 13-part series of photos documenting my trip to New York:

  • Took the Subway from Prospect Park in Brooklyn to Coney Island
  • Ate at Nathan’s. I only got a hot dog and a lemonade, but overall it was a pretty decent hot dog. Better than the one I got at Yankee Stadium. Joey Chestnut, I’m calling you OUT!
  • Walked around the Boardwalk and Carnival. The rides and attractions look like they are dying a slow, painful death. It’s like walking around Kiddie Land.
  • Took the Subway to Queens to see the Unisphere at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
  • I don’t think it was worth the hour-long trek to Queens to see only the Unisphere (which was pretty cool), but that’s probably just because I was tired from walking around in my chuck taylors for the past couple of days.

Last night I got bored and rotoscoped an old portrait of me Kanye-West-Heartless-music-video style. I really wish I still had a tablet so I could’ve done the details (nose, mouth, ear, folds) by hand because I don’t like how they look so uniform. Oh well, I’m getting fairly proficient with pen tool now. Anyway, enjoy:

Are You Professional?

February 15, 2009

I’m pretty much the “go-to-guy” at my house when something needs to be designed. Vice-pres John tasked me with whipping up a flyer for the professional event we are hosting next weekend. It took all of 20 minutes to make, including “borrowing” vector art and a panel discussion photo from the internet. Someday I’ll have enough stock photos and pen tool savvy to do it myself.
